Tamil music has a history to know that music is intertwined with the lives of Tamils. From Tolkappiyam to contemporary literature, many elements can be seen in Tamil that the wealth of music has been special in Tamil. Each literature has its own references to music according to its needs.
There is a saying that anyone whose heart doesn't melt for Thiruvasagam, will never be touched by any other words. Thiruvasagam is preserved to be one of the best Tamil literature word related to music. It is good that only human beings have been blessed to sing the phrases of the Tamil language in melodious music every day.
Rao Saheb Abraham Pandit was the first to outline the merits of Tamilisai in the early twentieth century. Karunamirtha Sagaram, written by Pandit, was the first book to address the problem that there was no single Tamilisai grammar book.
During the time of Abraham Pandit, all the singers who sang Tamil music used to sing songs only in Telugu. In that situation, Pandit wanted that the traditional way of music training should be in Tamil and he published the music training book ”Karunamirtha Sagara thirtu” in 1907. ”He was the first to say that music should be written in the mother tongue.
Arulthiru Swami Vibulananda Adikalar, a Muthamil scholar, has made immense contributions to the cause of Tamilisai. He is one of the pioneers of Tamil music in the twentieth century.
Among Vibulananda's researches, the ”Yazhl (Harp) Book” is the most prominent. He sang for the goddess, the motherland and the Tamil language. Although he learned a lot of languages, he loved his mother tongue, Tamil, studied it, mastered it well, filled the deficiencies found in it with his feelings and research skills and created value to the Tamil language.
Like the Tamil language, Tamil music is also an ancient integral part of the language and literature. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Arunachala Kavirayar, Muthu Thandavar and Marimutha Pillai, who are known as Adi Tamilisai Mummani or Tamilisai trio or Sirkazhi trio, who wrote songs in Tamil and sang in Tamil, were those three great men.
Adi Tamilisai gave shape to the kirtans known as Kriti. Today's structure of pallavi, anupallavi, stanza or take, touch and end are found in their songs. Arunachala Kavirayar:One of his works, Rama Nataka Kirtana, gave him eternal fame. Rama drama kirtans are sung in music concerts and dance concerts of this period. Muthuthandavar:He is a pioneer who has spread great fame by composing and singing many musical songs in Tamil music.
As Muthuthandavar was at the time when songs in Tamil music changed from pan form to kriti form, he also played a major role in that development. Therefore, he is considered as the father of Kirtana tradition. His songs “Arumarunthondru Tanimarunthu Ambalathe Kandene” and “Kaanamal Veenile Kaalam Kazhithome” are very popular. Marimutha Pillai:He was a music pioneer who composed and sang many popular songs. His songs are in Tamil.
He composed many songs for Chidambaram Nataraja. Many of Marimutha Pillai's musical compositions are played on concert stages even today. His song “Kaalai thooki nindraadum deivame Kai Thooki Aal Deivame“ is very popular.
Classical Tamil has various specialties and peculiarities. Tamil language is a dynamic and rich language that is timeless.
Since ancient times, many scholars and poets have explored the merits of the Tamil language, which is the mother tongue of Tamils, through literature. Bharatiyar, who is admired as a great poet, mentions that “we will find nothing like Tamil language in any other language” and “Tamil is the only way to rise in speech by praying and studying it, Papa”.
Let's praise Tamil as our wealth and preserve its uniqueness as mentioned by Paavendar Bharathidasan who said, “Our life and our wealth are unfading Tamil.
